Local park hosts celebration for David Crockett’s 238th birthday

GREENE COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) – David Crockett Birthplace State Park hosted a three-day celebration this weekend to mark his 238th birthday.

The celebration was for Northeast Tennessee’s David Crockett. The event welcomed local food trucks, music and live demonstrations about the frontiersman’s life. There was also storytelling, metalworking and traditional crafts.

Will Vought of the Friends of David Crockett Birthplace State Park told News Channel 11 that the birthday celebration and “major regional historical events” were among the most significant events at the park.

“David Crockett was born here at the confluence of the Nolichucky River and the great Limestone Creek,” Vought said. “That’s why we have the state park here. And every year, to celebrate his birthday, we have this Crockett Day celebration. We have performers and protesters from the area and the region. They come, and vendors, musicians, programmers, you name it. There’s something for everyone here.”

Vought said the event draws larger crowds each year and that many of them attended the event in their finest 18th-century attire.

Vought’s granddaughter said she appreciated the nostalgic entertainment elements.

“What I like about Crockett is that we have fun and I see people playing the games they were allowed to play back then,” she said.
