Walt Disney World’s annual back-to-school event supports A Gift for Teaching

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Florida. – Volunteers at Walt Disney World went through thousands of school supplies on Thursday as part of the company’s annual back-to-school drive to benefit A Gift For Teaching.

For the first time, the event was held at Disney’s BoardWalk Resort to allow more space for counting and organizing supplies.

Nelson Placa, senior manager of corporate responsibility at Walt Disney World, said the event attracts hundreds of volunteers.

“It’s important for us to be part of this and to be able to help the teachers. And it’s great for the teachers to be able to give these things to the students,” Placa said.

As a founding sponsor of A Gift For Teaching, Disney has partnered with the organization for more than 25 years.

“We are giving back to those who are part of our community, those we call home, Central Florida, and providing an opportunity to come together as a team,” Placa said.

A Gift for Teaching is Central Florida’s premier provider of free school supplies to teachers whose students need it most.

Angela Garcia, vice president of development and marketing, said demand is growing every year.

“We want to support our teachers and make sure they don’t have to pay out of their own pockets to provide for their children,” Garcia said.

Last year, Disney cast members donated more than 110,000 school supplies to A Gift for Teaching.
