How a fashion icon’s favorite fabric can transform your space

How a fashion icon’s favorite fabric can transform your space

The fluffy, curly fabric Bouclé has been around for decades, but lately it has been popping up in a very special place: the living room.

What began as a trendy new fabric in fashion in the mid-20th century has recently become a staple in home designs, from modern farmhouse to Scandinavian minimalism and beyond.

So where exactly does it come from and why are we still obsessed with it after all these years? Designer and CEO Jodi Peterson by Elizabeth Erin Designs explained.

“Bouclé fabric with its looped structure first appeared with midcentury modern designers, such as Coco Chanel,” says Peterson. “She first introduced it with her iconic suits – and today we see this structured fabric finding a place in our homes, conveying a sense of cozy elegance.”

If you’re ready to take a cue from Chanel and jump on the bouclé bandwagon, we have a few trendy looks from Instagram that will tempt you.

As Chanel said, “Fashions pass, only style remains the same.”

1. Bouclé barrel chairs

Chanel’s bouclé jacket, often referred to as the “Chanel jacket,” has become a symbol of timeless elegance.

So if you’re new to the bouclé trend, one of the best places to start is with an iconic chair you’ll keep forever, like this one brought to you by @katie.fischer. It’s endlessly cozy and will go with just about any decor and seasonal design.

“Few pieces of furniture are able to make a strong visual statement while simultaneously exuding coziness like bouclé barrel chairs,” says Kathy Kuo by Kathy Kuo Homes. “I love the size and scale of these structured swivel chairs. They add softness and playfulness to a space that might otherwise seem austere.”

2. Bouclé chair cushion

Chanel, also known Mademoiselleused bouclé in a revolutionary way because she combined it with her minimalist design aesthetic.

Bouclé designs are therefore not limited to one shape – they just have to be chic. Whether you want a formal living room like the one above or something more relaxed like this design by @brookemoraleshome, the possibilities are endless.

“Pairing a bouclé cushion with a modern metal-framed chair will add the perfect balance of texture and modern Scandi design to any room,” says Peterson. “The knotty, soft texture of the bouclé creates a beautiful backdrop for rich, velvety accents like these throw pillows.”
