American Airlines’ small but powerful domestic network from Newark Liberty Airport

American Airlines’ small but powerful domestic network from Newark Liberty Airport

As a traditional US airline, there is no question that American Airlines has a strong presence in the New York metropolitan area. The Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier is one of the few airlines that serves all three of the region’s airports – specifically calling John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA) its hubs. The airline has the largest network at the former, but also serves a variety of routes from the latter. In addition, American has a robust regional network from LGA.

The airline offers hundreds of flights a day from both airports, but also has a strong operation from nearby Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). The airport is undoubtedly dominated by its competitor United Airlines, but demand for American has grown over the years. The airline’s network grew even further when it merged its operations with US Airways in 2015. One of the benefits of flying American to EWR is that the airline operates from the airport’s new and state-of-the-art Terminal A, which opened last year.

More than 1,200 flights to five destinations

The oneThe global alliance airline’s market share may not be much in the way of United’s at the EWR, but it still serves more destinations than the third-largest carrier, Delta Air Lines. American serves five destinations from the EWR, all of which are the airline’s hubs:

  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)
  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
  • Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
  • Miami International Airport (MIA)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)

According to aviation data and analytics provider Cirium, American scheduled over 1,200 flights at EWR in September, offering more than 211,000 seats and over 224 million available seat miles (ASMs).

Charlotte, Chicago and Dallas/Fort Worth

Most flights are to and from CLT. The route, which covers 528 miles each way, has a total of 304 flights — 152 in each direction. The route typically uses the Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8, although American has used its Airbus narrow-body aircraft between the two cities in the past. Next month, the A320 will operate just one flight in each direction, while the A321 is scheduled on 125 flights — 62 northbound and 63 southbound. The remaining flights will be handled by the 737-800 and MAX 8. Both aircraft offer 172 seats in a two-class layout. First Class has 16 seats, while the main cabin has 156 seats — 24 of which are designated as Main Cabin Extra seats with increased legroom.

American will offer a total of 54,476 seats between CLT and EWR – 27,238 each way. The airline also competes on this route with United Airlines, United Express and Spirit Airlines.

The second most popular route American serves from EWR is ORD, covering 719 miles in each direction and has a total of 296 flights scheduled for next month. The airline will operate three main aircraft types on the route – A319s, 737-800s and MAX 8s – while its wholly owned regional carrier Envoy Air will operate the Embraer E170s and E175s under the American Eagle brand. The 737-800 will understandably handle the most flights, 92 in each direction, for a total of 184. The A319s and MAX 8s both have a total of 54 scheduled flights, or 27 in each direction. Envoy will operate just four flights – two each on the E170 and E175.

American’s A319s seat 128 passengers in a two-class configuration. First Class has eight seats, and Main Cabin has the remaining 120. There are 24 Main Cabin Extra seats. The E170 has a total of 65 seats. First Class has 12 seats, Main Cabin Extra has 20 seats, and there are 33 standard Main Cabin seats. The E175 is slightly larger but has the same number of First Class and Main Cabin Extra seats. It has 44 standard seats in the Main Cabin. In total, American will offer 48,130 seats on this route. United also flies between EWR and ORD, as does Spirit.

The airline’s nonstop service between EWR and PHX is its longest route from the New York metropolitan area airport at 2,133 miles. However, it has the lowest frequency compared to the previously mentioned routes. Next month, American will operate a total of 79 flights to EWR and 78 flights to PHX, for a total of 157 flights. The airline will use the 737 MAX 8, A321 and A321neo on this route, offering a total of 28,972 seats. The A321neo has a slightly larger capacity than the A321, with 196 seats.
