Last season was a time of transition for the Big 12.

Long-time conference stars Texas and Oklahoma will stay for one more year before facing their departure to the SEC. The conference welcomed Houston, UCF, Cincinnati and BYU into its ranks, all of which finished among the bottom five teams in the league table.

There are more changes coming ahead of the 2024 season. The Longhorns and Sooners are gone, but four teams from the Pac-12 – Arizona, Arizona State, Utah and former Big 12 member Colorado – are now under the Big 12 umbrella, bringing the conference that had 10 members two years ago to a whopping 16 teams.

What the Big 12 lacks in an obvious national title contender, it more than makes up for in depth and intrigue. The league has five teams ranked between 13th and 24th in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll — Utah (No. 13), Kansas State (No. 17), Oklahoma State (No. 18), Arizona (No. 21) and Kansas (No. 24) — and while it’s almost certainly not a serious College Football Playoff threat, few teams will draw more national attention this season than Deion Sanders-led Colorado.

The race for the conference crown and a guaranteed playoff spot begins this week when all 16 teams begin the 2024 season.
