STEUBENVILLE – The Big Red volleyball team got off to a good start Tuesday as host against Indian Creek, but had to hold on at the end of the first set to avoid falling behind.

They did, however, and then prevented the Redskins from sustaining similar runs in the next two sets, winning 25-21, 25-17 and 25-19 at the Crimson Center.

“That’s something we’ve been working on from the first game to today — keeping the momentum when we have the momentum,” Big Red head coach Logan Colabella said. “We emphasized it (Monday) in practice. The first set had its moments, but in the second and third they really kept (the momentum).”

After Big Red (3-2) built a significant lead in the first set, pulling ahead to 22-11 and looking set to have a smooth run, the Redskins (3-1) scored 10 of the next 11 points to pull within 23-21.

However, Big Red scored the last two points and prevented the Creek from catching up.

In the second set, Creek took the lead several times early on before Big Red pulled away and took a 25-17 and 2-0 lead. In the third set, they then completed the sweep by pulling away again after some back and forth at the beginning and finished the game 25-19.

“We bounced back right away, that was the key,” Colabella said. “One thing is for sure: when this team is down or things aren’t going the way they want, they don’t give up.”

“We have worked very hard on this and they are recovering very quickly.”

This was Creek’s first loss of the season.

“We definitely lacked a lot of consistency,” said Indian Creek head coach Crystal Hammack. “We have a lot more potential on this team than we showed.”

For Big Red, Giuilana Cramer had eight kills, Arya Bigsby had six kills, Sena Smith, Analesa Perdue and Emma Lyons each had five kills, Aubrey Slussar had four aces and four assists and Kaitlyn Smith had five points and twelve assists.

Creek was led by nine digs and nine kills from Camryn Ketron, eight assists and four digs from Gabby Taylor, ten assists and an ace from Brooke Crites and eight kills from Cara Vandeborne.
