Peoria native Kendrick Green has secured a spot on the Houston Texans’ 53-man roster, the team announced Tuesday following official NFL cuts.

The 6-foot-4, 300-pound offensive lineman from the University of Illinois will begin his fourth NFL season with the Texans. The Peoria High School graduate is listed as Houston’s backup left guard and is one of nine offensive linemen on the Houston roster that won the AFC South and a playoff game last season behind rookie quarterback CJ Stroud.

Last season, Green was traded to Houston by the Pittsburgh Steelers, who selected him in the third round of the 2021 draft. He started three of four games in Houston before tearing the meniscus in his right knee and not allowing a single sack in 208 snaps. Green had surgery last fall, and when he visited Peoria for his annual youth camp, he felt he was on track to be fully fit by training camp.

“I’m doing something for my knee to get it back in shape,” Green said in June. “I’m pretty much full-time now, just keeping the training wheels on as far as training and stuff like that, and then when camp comes around, I’ll be knocking the doors down.”

The Texans open the season on Sunday, September 8th at 12:00 p.m. on the road against the Indianapolis Colts. The following week, Houston hosts the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football.
