The Australian Publishers Association (APA) has announced that Books+Publisher will take over production management of the annual Australian Book Industry Awards (ABIAs) under a new licensing agreement.

In 2025, the 25th year of the ABIAs, the awards will be known as “The Australian Book Industry Awards presented by Books+Publishers’.

APA CEO Patrizia Di Biase-Dyson said of the agreement: “It is a great achievement to have delivered industry awards for 24 years and I would like to thank the many sponsors and hundreds of industry volunteers who have contributed to this success over many years. We believe this partnership will shine an even greater spotlight on the best Australian books, audiobooks and exceptional talent across the book industry.”

Books+Publisher CEO Gary Pengelly said: “This is an exciting opportunity for Books+Publisher to diversify our industry activities and follow the example of other international trade publications that organize industry events. We hope that the central positioning of Books+Publisher in our industry will allow us to broaden audience engagement to promote and grow an event that is the only celebration of local publishing and books of its kind.”

Books+Publisher will present the 2025 awards with input from industry leaders serving on the ABIA committee, including Dan Ruffino, Managing Director of S&S Australia, Louise Stark, CEO of Hachette Australia, and Keiran Rogers, Sales Director of Affirm Press.

Stark said of the news:Books+PublisherThe central and independent role of Investors within the industry makes them the perfect partner for ABIA’s growth. “We can’t wait to start planning next year.”

Further information on the 2025 awards, including nomination dates, tickets and shortlists, will be announced later in the year.

The 2024 ABIA Awards ceremony took place in Melbourne in May. Handbook “The Voice in Parliament” (Thomas Mayo & Kerry O’Brien, HG Explore) won the Book of the Year award.
