Local artist leaves his mark on the Waco community

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Waco native Cade Kegerreis is exhibiting over 25 murals in the Waco area, leaving his mark on the community.

Kegerreis is a traveling muralist. He owns a studio in Waco called DVLVD. Most recently, he was commissioned to paint a mural in Aggie Park.

When Kegerreis was growing up in Waco, his art teachers inspired him to pursue art as a hobby. Towards the end of high school, he began to consider the possibility of a career as an artist. He has been a full-time artist since graduating from Baylor University in 2017.

Kegerreis said he wants to leave the same mark on Waco’s youth that he left as a child.

“So many kids today are growing up without art classes in school, and I think that precludes the possibility of them doing it themselves,” Kegerreis said. “For me, that’s why I want to push forward with what I’m doing right now.”

Kegerreis said he enjoys working with children who want to become artists the most.

“They ask the nice questions,” said Kegerreis. “The naive questions. They can still imagine that they might do something like that in the future.”

Kegerreis said he believes public art is important to the community.

“Public art just gives you a sense of belonging, no matter what the artwork is,” Kegerreis said.

For this reason, he praised Waco’s commitment to the arts scene.

“I think Central Texas in particular is just realizing that public art is a great thing for business, for viewers, for everyone involved,” Kegerreis said. “I’m glad that a really good art community is developing in Waco.”

Although Kengerreis has created murals across the country, he hopes to create them anywhere and see the world.
