Green Bay students start early because of NFL Draft

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Students and teachers at Baird Elementary say they are ready for the new school year and excited for the draft coming to town in April.

The Ashwaubenon School District is also starting early. Both districts say they want to give students and staff a break during convocation and to compensate, they have to start earlier.

District officials asked the school board to apply for a waiver from the state Department of Education to begin the school year before Sept. 1.

The letter to the school board said state law allows school districts to apply for a waiver in “extraordinary circumstances.” More than 300,000 people are expected in the greater Green Bay area for the draft, creating traffic congestion and safety concerns for students and staff.

Action 2 News spoke to a teacher at Baird Elementary School and she said there is a lot of excitement despite the early return to the classroom.

“The summer has felt a little shorter because we’re back and everything feels so different with the weather, but I’m excited for it. I think it’s really cool that our city is getting this opportunity for the draft and there are so many opportunities for our students that a lot of students won’t get to experience,” said Shainna Szwet, a bilingual teacher at Baird Elementary School.

There will be no classes during the draft from April 23 to 25.
