How to reorder Instagram photos when publishing

1. Carousel story

Note that you can’t rearrange a story carousel after you publish it, but you can change the order before you publish. Also, this flexibility only works for photos and videos you added from the gallery, not those shot with the Instagram camera. Let’s get started with the steps.

Step 1: Start the Instagram app and tap the Your story Button to create a story.

Step 2: Now select the photos in the order you want to publish them and tap Next.

Step 3: On the next screen, choose how you want to publish the story.

The images will be numbered according to your selection. If you accidentally select the wrong image flow, deselect it and select it again. After selecting, proceed to the next step.

Step 4: Reorder the stories on this screen by dragging and dropping the images from the bottom left of your Android screen, then tap Next.

note: This feature is not available for iPhone users at the time of writing.

Step 5: Finally, tap on the bottom sheet share Button.

2. Carousel post

Step 1: Start the Instagram app and tap the Add (+) Symbol in the lower navigation.

note: Instagram is constantly experimenting with its UI/UX, so you may also find the option in the top navigation bar.

Step 2: Tap the Select multiple and tap the photos or videos in the order you want them to appear in the carousel post.

note: Like in Stories, if you select a photo in the wrong order, tap it to deselect it and select it in the correct order.

Step 3: Tap the Next (arrow) to edit the images or videos with the Instagram filters. Once you have selected the filter, tap Next.

Step 4: Finally, add captions, location, etc. before posting by clicking the Check mark.

That’s it. You’ve published a carousel post on Instagram without any problem. That was the case when you hadn’t published the post yet. If you’ve already done that, there’s still a way to rearrange photos in a carousel post. Read on.

How to reorder photos in Instagram posts after publishing

There is no direct way to change the order of a carousel post after it is published. However, there is a workaround to delete a photo from the published carousel and restore the deleted photos in the desired order.

note: Your carousel post must have at least 3 photos because Instagram doesn’t consider two photos as a carousel. Additionally, you can’t add a new photo to an existing post.

Step 1: Home Instagram and navigate to your profile to open the carousel post you want to edit.

Step 2: Once the carousel post is open, tap the Three-dot symbol and select the Edit Option.

Now swipe through the carousel post to reveal the trash can icon in the top left corner of each photo.

Step 3: Delete all the photos you want to rearrange by clicking the Trash can iconand tap in the confirmation field Delete.

Step 4: If you have deleted the photos you want to rearrange, tap the Check mark button to save the changes.

Step 5: Now go to your Instagram profile and tap the Hamburger symbol top right.

Step 6: Choose Your activity. On the next screen, scroll down and tap Recently deleted Option.

Step 7: Tap the first photo you want to restore. Repeat for all other photos you want to restore, in that order.

Step 8: In the post, tap the Three-dot symbol and select Restore from the lower sheet.

How to reorder existing posts in your profile

Instagram doesn’t let you directly edit or reorder the published posts for public viewing, but you can use the Your Activity feature to sort the posts from oldest to newest or by a specific date to either view the posts or delete them in bulk.

You can archive a post if you care too much about the grid of your Instagram posts and want photos that complement your profile. Let’s look at the methods in detail.

Method 1: Sort posts

Step 1: Start the Instagram app and tap your Profile picture in the bottom navigation bar.

Step 2: Tap the Hamburger symbol top right and select Your activity from the lower sheet.

Step 3: Go to Photos and videosand select on the next picture Posts.

Step 4: Under Posts, tap either Oldest to newest or Newest to oldest.

Method 2: Archive posts

The archiving feature on Instagram allows you to hide a post from your profile without deleting it completely. When you archive a post, it is saved in a private section of your profile that only you can see.
