Lily Allen sent a wild gift from a charity after returning her dog to the shelter for eating her passport

Dogs are for eternity, not just at Christmas: we have all heard this saying at some point. Singer Lily Allen, however, hasn’t heard it.

When you adopt a little furry friend, it can be difficult to adapt your life to their needs and also remember that those little teeth love to chew.

From cables to carpets, puppies are a nightmare in your home for the first few weeks until they realize what they can and can’t do.

But then there was one thing this dog did that was the last straw for the Smile singer.

When Allen brought home a puppy for her children Ethel, 13, and Marnie, 11, during the COVID pandemic, she probably thought the dog would be with her for life.

That was until Mary (the puppy) chewed up her passports, which had dire consequences.

The singer then decided that it was time to take Mary to an animal shelter, whereupon the animal rights organization PETA lost its composure and sent her a generous gift in response.

The 39-year-old immediately received a letter from the organization as well as a small toy.

How bad can a toy be, right?

Incorrect.

It was a mechanical dog toy with the accompanying words of Elisa Allen of the charity, who wrote: “It really is the only animal you should bring into your home. Dogs should never be treated as accessories to be thrown away when they become inconvenient.”

Allen, who lives in New York with Stranger Things Star David Harbour, 49, and her children discussed the events that led to the dog being found on the Miss me? Podcasts.

The singer told her friend and Miquita Oliver: “She was a very badly behaved dog and I tried very hard with her, but it just didn’t work out and the passports were the straw that broke the camel’s back, so to speak.”

In the August 22 episode, she brought the dog home, “but then he ate my passport, so I took her back to the shelter.”

She explained: “It ate all three of our passports, and our visas were in there. And I can’t tell you how much money it cost me to get everything replaced because it was COVID. So it was just an absolute logistical nightmare.”

In addition, the father of their children, Sam Cooper, Allen’s ex-husband, lives in England. This meant that the children could not see their father for months because “the damn dog ate the passports”.

Allen then told the puppy, “You ruined my life,” and insisted that the dog had “behaved very badly” and “it just didn’t work out.”

The kicker, however, is that Allen is still trying to adopt another dog and hopes to soon bring home a Chihuahua mix for her children, who have already chosen the name Jude Bellingham for the upcoming addition to the family.

In response to Allen’s attempt to bring another dog home, PETA Vice President Allen wrote in her letter, “While you may be able to get new passports and rebook your flights, Mary may spend many months in the shelter waiting for a new family – if she is even lucky enough to find one.

“Dogs should never be treated like accessories that you throw away when they become inconvenient.”

UNILAD has contacted PETA and representatives of Lily Allen for comment.
