Tinashe didn’t know her song Nasty would become “so big.”
The singer-songwriter reflected on the success of her 2024 song “Nasty,” which went viral on social media, particularly the line “match my freak.”
In a recent interview with Elle, Tinashe was asked if she knew the song, which appears on her seventh studio album, Quantum Baby, would be a hit.
“I mean, no, just because I really don’t put those expectations on myself anymore,” she replied. “I just try to make the best record and something that just feels good, and that’s how this song came about.”
However, the 31-year-old explained that she has a good feeling about the song, which she wrote during the holidays.
“I feel like every record I make, or a lot of my records, I have that ‘this feels like a hit’ mentality,” she told the publication. “But I definitely didn’t know it was going to be this big.”
Tinashe then revealed how she came up with the line “Match my Freak.”
“Honestly, it was a freestyle. So it wasn’t even something I really thought about much,” said the Watch Me Work singer. “I actually remember when I came up with that line, I was like, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say that before. It was just one of those ideas.”
Tinashe released “Nasty” in April, and two months later it became her first Billboard Hot 100 entry as a leading artist in a decade.
She dropped Quantum Baby earlier this month.
