Palo Alto art festival delights the masses

Art fans, foodies and other curious Peninsula residents flocked to University Avenue on Saturday for the first day of the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday and stretches from Webster Street to High Street.

Bright sunshine gave way to occasional cooling gusts of wind as thousands of people strolled through the festival grounds on Saturday. Exhibitors included fine artists, jewelry makers and even an automaker. The festival normally draws about 500,000 visitors, according to organizers at the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce.

For the 17th year, famous chalk artists returned to transform Tasso Street into a work of art. Some of their works were up to 30 square meters in size.

Musicians set up their music on Waverley and Webster streets and busked on street corners. Beer and wine were available for purchase and food stalls lined the route.

Several blocks along the way to the university were closed and parking was scarce on Saturday afternoon.
