The Civil Air Patrol’s Tar River Composite Squadron is celebrating its 44th anniversary this month, unit commander 1st Lt. Stephen Beal announced.

“It’s incredible to think about how many years this squadron has been in service and how many lives it has touched and changed,” said Beal. “I’m proud to be a part of it and welcome everyone to our birthday celebration and open house to share it with you!”

The public is invited to join former members at the Tar River Composite Squadron’s birthday celebration and open house, which will be held on Thursday, August 29th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Rocky Mount-Wilson Regional Airport, 7972 FAA Drive outside of Rocky Mount.

The Civil Air Patrol was founded on December 1, 1941, by a group of aviation enthusiasts and private pilots who wanted to donate their time and aircraft to protect the nation’s coastlines during World War II and to perform other important civil defense missions. Seven years later, it became the official civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force.

In its support role, CAP operates the world’s largest fleet of single-engine aircraft for search and rescue, disaster relief, and training and education. For more information, visit CAP.news or GoCivilAirPatrol.com.

The local squadron was formed on August 27, 1980, and first met at the Wilson Industrial Air Center, moving to its current location approximately 17 years ago.

Squadron meetings are held Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. at the Rocky Mount-Wilson Regional Airport. For more information about the Tar River Composite Squadron, contact 1st Lt. Steven Beal at 252-290-8417 or [email protected].

Admission to next week’s open house is free. Guests are asked to RSVP online at forms.office.com/r/u9M2zJY7fw.
