Murray returned to the Fringe this year with his comedy show and the 2023 Playbill Pick Tim Murray is Witches.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world with over 3,700 shows. This year Playbill is in town for the festival and we’re taking you along. Follow us as we cover every single aspect of the Fringe, aka our real Brigadier General!

Comedian Tim Murray returned to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year with his 2023 Playbill Pick show Tim Murray is WitchesWatch Playbill’s Jeffrey Vizcaíno interview Murray in the video above.

Murray’s show is a self-described “hour of comedy about the queer experience and how all witches are inherently queer and why queer people are obsessed with witches.” There is one witch Murray has a particular fondness for, which is evident in his choice of costume: a mystical robe with green body paint reminiscent of Evil‘s leading witch Elphaba.

“I’m obviously obsessed with every single one of those women (who have played Elphaba),” Murray says. “I think it’s a dream come true for every gay person on Earth to be mentioned in the same breath as Elphaba. I feel so deeply for them because (the green dye) is hard to pull off. I go to cafes and flirt with baristas and they’ll say something like, ‘Are you OK? You look seasick,’ because I’m always just a little bit tinted green. So I give myself completely to that role.”

During his comedy hour, Murray finds more connections to witches like Elphaba than just green-tinted skin and explores how witches inspired him to confidently embrace his queer identity. Read Playbill’s review of the show’s 2023 run here.

Murray has finished his Fringe tour and will bring his show to London and then embark on a 26-city tour across the US and Canada. Murray’s US tour will include a show on September 25 at Joe’s Pub with a “very special guest”.
