Kamala Harris promises ‘a new path forward’ after her official nomination — Capital Brief

The news: Kamala Harris has promised a “new way forward” after her nomination as presidential candidate was approved at the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

The context: The vice president made the remarks while being sent to the DNC from a rally in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a key swing state where Republicans held their convention last month.

Although Harris will deliver an official acceptance speech on Friday (Australian time), her brief remarks came after delegations from every state cast their votes to officially nominate her and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Harris’ entry into the race following President Joe Biden’s exit has given Democrats new momentum, as she is ahead of Republican candidate Donald Trump nationally and competitive in swing states.

At the end of the second night of the DNC, former President Barack Obama will address the crowd of about 10,000 people.

The first evening of the convention concluded with an important speech by Biden in which he declared that the Democrats were in a “battle for the soul of America.”

What they said: Speaking alongside Walz in Milwaukee, Harris said, “I thank everyone there and here for believing in what we can accomplish together. We are so honored to be your nominees. This is a campaign driven by the people, and together we will forge a new path forward, a future of freedom, opportunity, optimism and faith.”
