While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have bravely avoided visiting the interior of their house, in MontecitoCalifornia, we just took a look inside one of the rooms. The couple met with Jane Pauley for a rare joint interview – their first in three years – which was broadcast on CBS Sunday Morning on August 4. The images reveal a glimpse into a room on the ground floor of their house, and it is a far cry from the gilded, damask-lined rooms of Harry’s youth.
A multi-colored blanket that looks very Ralph Lauren rests on a large white sofa accented with yellow pillows. There’s a narrow wooden bench and wooden candlesticks next to a cross-backed chair that offers a view out the window. A polka dot-style lamp adds a playful energy to the otherwise rustic ranch vibe of the space. Other decor items that caught the eye despite the distracting background blur? A Mexican serape tapestry hung like a curtain on a nearby wall, a floral rug in brown and cream, a ceramic bowl repurposed as a floor object, as well as a full-length mirror with (you guessed it!) a wooden frame that pushes the farmhouse aesthetic even further.
“The style is very Californian,” says interior designer Mark D. Sikes. “The white painted surfaces give the space a fresh feel, but you still see the textures of a ranch-style home. The wood tones of the furniture add warmth and a welcoming feel.” The bright textiles and patterns, Sikes adds, are what make the whole “Cali look.” “The patterned lampshades and striped blanket are wonderful accessories that add life and personality to the space.”
The couple moved into their $14.6 million Nine-bedroom Montecito estate in the summer of 2020 after giving up royal life. The Tuscan-inspired outdoor spaces include a large pool, tennis court, chicken coop (aptly named “Archie’s Chicken Inn”), rose gardens, tea house and other extravagances. The Duchess spoke to The cut, She said it was “calm” and “healing” and ultimately gave her a “sense of freedom.”
“We did everything we could to get this house,” she told the publication. “Because you walk in and think: joy. And you breathe out.”
Would you like to experience this freedom in your own home? Then these decorative items are just right for you. They fit well into your design – and are probably cheaper too.
