The new art program “A Beautiful Message” in Waco aims to empower youth

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Waco’s “A Beautiful Message” arts program will begin soon after receiving funding from the city. The program aims to empower youth.

The American Rescue Plan Act, signed into law by President Biden in 2021, granted Waco $34.7 million. Of that amount, $250,000 was awarded to Creative Waco, which decided to fund “A Beautiful Message.”

The program consists of workshops designed to help youth express themselves. Participants receive instruction on mural painting, learn from other local artists, and have their work exhibited at the Waco Art Center.

The program’s creator, Vincent Thomas, said this year is crucial for youth self-expression.

“It’s a very important election year,” Thomas said. “So I really think this is a great opportunity to bring more positive energy as people have these very important discussions about the world and society and all of these social issues that affect our daily lives. I think it’s very important that not only youth understand what’s happening, but also know that they have a voice in what’s happening and that they can influence people’s perceptions of these conversations.”

Thomas said he always wanted to help shape the next generation.

“I have a son of my own, he’s four years old,” said Thomas, “so he’s a huge inspiration for how I want to use my art to shape the younger generation and give them more confidence and security in their personalities.”

Thomas said he hoped the young artists would be equipped with skills that would help them shape their future.

“With art, as much as we love creating something, it’s important to know how to articulate your work and stand behind it,” Thomas said. “So I think they can apply those skills in any profession.”

The application deadline for the program is August 23rd.
