Prince William is slowly returning to royal duties following news that Kate Middleton is undergoing cancer treatment. A week after resuming his public engagements, the Prince of Wales visited St Michael’s Church of England High School on Thursday, April 25 to watch a student-led mental health initiative – and it was clear that his wife’s health was close to the class’s hearts. He reportedly left the event with nice gifts for Princess Catherine, as well as some presents for his three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

The visit was particularly significant as the Birmingham school first caught the attention of Prince William and Kate Middleton in October 2023. On World Mental Health Day, a 12-year-old student named Freddie Hadley invited the royal couple to visit the school to launch the school’s #AmIManlyEnough campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the high suicide rate among young men. At the time, the Duke was personally shared his regret on X (formerly Twitter) and wrote: “Good afternoon Freddie, I am so sorry that Catherine and I cannot be with you and the other students at St Michael’s today. It is so important to tackle mental health issues and stigma head on, please continue this important work.”

Although the Princess of Wales was unable to attend the event, it was clear that she was present in spirit as Prince William left the engagement laden with gifts for his family. Kerry Whitehouse, one of the school’s senior mental health officers, reportedly said People that the gift basket contained meaningful items such as Lego sunflowers.

According to Whitehouse, “building things is therapeutic and sunflowers represent happiness, positivity and strength,” while the seeds represent sowing “seeds of positivity.” They also included a crocheted starfish and a story about making a difference to help lift the mother-of-three’s spirits.
