“I am honored and thrilled to welcome Butch Ware as my running mate and the Vice President we need at this historic moment. His personal experience in overcoming systemic injustice, his deep knowledge of history and popular movements, and his commitment to building a sustainable, just and peaceful world make Butch the ideal candidate,” Stein said on social media.
“This is truly a historic election result, bringing together a Jewish woman and a Black Muslim man against genocide, endless wars, climate change and rampant injustice, and for an economy that works for working people, a livable future for our children, and an America and world that works for all of us.”
Stein made the revelation Friday during a high-energy virtual rally for the Green Party’s national nominating convention.

Ware is a professor at UC Santa Barbara whose research interests include African history, African American history, and Islamic intellectual history. His work examines the connections between Islam and the abolition of slavery.
“I am a scholar and a teacher. I have studied revolutionary movements and struggles, but one thing I know is that if I am called to a fight, to a fight for the freedom of our time, then I will not shrink from that fight,” Ware said during the rally on Friday.

The news that Ware is officially on the Green Party’s ticket comes at a time when Democratic candidate Kamala Harris is facing sharp criticism for her opposition to an arms embargo on Israel and her apparently dismissive treatment of peace protesters.
Mass demonstrations in solidarity with the occupied and besieged people of Palestine are planned during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next week.
In contrast, the Stein campaign advocates a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and an immediate end to all U.S. military aid to Israel, as well as a Green New Deal, Medicare For All, an Economic Bill of Rights, reparations for blacks in the U.S., and more.

The Green Party is holding its own convention this weekend, and Stein is expected to win the party’s nomination easily. The presidential candidate announced in May that she had already secured the delegates needed to do so.
Meanwhile, the Stein campaign and the Greens are engaged in a grassroots campaign to appear on the November ballot nationwide – and at the same time Defending against legal challenges from the Democrats with the aim of blocking their access.
