A glimpse into Waititi’s early life

Taika Waititi, real name Taika David Cohen, was born on 16 August 1975 in Wellington, New Zealand. He grew up in a vibrant cultural environment. His father was a Māori artist and his mother was a teacher with Russian-Jewish and European roots. He spent his childhood in Wellington and also in Raukokore, a small town that played a big role in building his strong connection to his Māori background as well as his family’s artistic influences.

Taika Waititi’s parents divorced when he was young, so his mother raised him. Although it wasn’t easy for him at the time, his early exposure to the arts prepared him for life in this creative industry. He attended Onslow College before moving on to Victoria University of Wellington, where he studied theatre and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1997.

From the roots of comedy to international fame

Taika Waititi began his film career as a comedian. While at university, he joined the comedy group “So You’re a Man”. He later formed The Humourbeasts with Jemaine Clement, with whom they won the Billy T Award, the highest award for comedians in New Zealand (1999).

Taika Waititi’s debut film, Two Cars, One Night (2003), was well received and even received an Oscar nomination for Best Live Action Short Film. This opening opened the door to his first feature-length film, Eagle vs Shark (2007), a queer romantic comedy that helped introduce his peculiar style to a global audience.

Breakthrough with Boy and Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Taika Waititi’s feature film Boy (2010) was New Zealand’s highest-grossing film at the time of its release, exploring family and identity through the eyes of a young Māori boy in a film he wrote and starred in. His film Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) also received critical acclaim after being voted one of the best films of the year, and became the highest-grossing New Zealand film of all time. This adventure comedy cemented Waititi’s reputation for marrying humor with deep emotional impact.

A new chapter with Marvel and Jojo Rabbit

Major studios noticed Taika Waititi’s exceptional talent and directed Thor: Ragnarok (2017). He breathed new life into the Thor series with his witty script and vivid imagery. Moreover, even after returning to the MCU, he continued to forge his own path with the character, writing and directing Thor: Love and Thunder (2022).

But his career took a significant turn with the film Jojo Rabbit (2019). In this satire about World War II, he played Adolf Hitler, an imaginary friend of a young boy. The film received six Oscar nominations and won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, making him the first Māori to win in that category.

Television projects and continued success

Outside of his film work, Waititi has also made significant contributions to television, co-creating and producing Reservation Dogs, an Oklahoma-set dramedy about indigenous teenagers, before directing and starring in Our Flag Means Death, a comedy about a hapless pirate.

He also voiced IG-11 in The Mandalorian (2019), which earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination, demonstrating his ability to make an impact and stay relevant in various media projects.

Personal life

However, it is not just Waititi’s artistic achievements that make him famous; he is also known for promoting the representation of indigenous peoples in art. For example, he often incorporates Maori culture into his works, thus championing Maori and indigenous filmmakers. In his private life, he has had relationships with notable figures, including British singer Rita Ora, whom he married in August 2022.

Today, Taika Waititi celebrates his 69th birthday, and his life is a testament to inventiveness and imagination. By combining comedy with touching narratives, he has endeared himself to millions of film lovers around the world.
