Meghan Markle and Prince Harry did not arrive in Colombia empty-handed, as they showered the country’s Vice President, Francia Márquez, with surprise gifts upon their arrival.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex landed in the South American country on Thursday to begin their four-day trip.
After arriving in the capital Bogotá, the 43-year-old “Suits” graduate presented Márquez, the first black woman to hold this office in Colombia, with a “personal gift.”
The Sussexes were personally invited by Márquez after she was touched by the couple’s insightful Netflix documentary.
After exchanging gifts, the two women posed for photos together.
According to Harper’s Bazaar, Márquez then reportedly expressed her admiration for Prince Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, who died in 1997.
Harry, 39, and Meghan were invited for tea and coffee at Márquez’s private residence, where they sampled traditional pan de bono – a Colombian cheese bread.
Later that day, the Sussexes were seen holding hands as they strolled through Bogotá.
The couple has a busy schedule for their short trip, which began with attending an insight session at a local school.
The couple also attended a summit with experts, activists and community members committed to creating more positive online environments – a cause close to Harry and Meghan’s hearts.
Later Friday, the two will meet with students before attending a lunch hosted by Márquez.
You end the day with a meeting with the participants of the Colombian Invictus Games.
Notably, Colombia was the first South American country to participate in Harry’s Invictus Games, which he launched in 2014 and are aimed at active and retired military personnel from around the world who are wounded, injured or ill.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will also visit Cartagena and Cali during their trip.
The trip comes just days after the couple’s chief of staff, Josh Kettler, resigned after just three months in the job.
The reason for Kettler’s departure was announced on Wednesday – just one day before he was due to accompany the Sussexes on their trip to Colombia.
The visit comes just months after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s trip to Nigeria.
