How the Guardian’s story could influence the plot of Dragon Age: The Veilguard

BioWare’s next installment in the Dragon Age Universe, Dragon Age: The Veilguardis now in sight, and fans are expected to get their hands on it in fall 2024. Information has been trickling out to the public, including which companions players can expect, the title of the player character, and the fact that players will see previously unexplored parts of Thedas.

What isn’t clear, however, is who will be returning other than the previously announced characters like Lace Harding, Varric, and Solas. But even without other returning characters, fans could expect decisions from previous titles to have an impact. The Guardian had to make some pretty important decisions that would shake up the world even outside of Ferelden, and may yet have an impact on the story of . Veil Guardeven though decades have passed.

6 The player’s backstory and romantic choice

Although it is a small decision, it could affect dialogues or codex entries

One of the most important decisions, especially for the player, is the characters he will play. Originsplayers have the ability to fully customize their Guardian by choosing their origin story, gender, class, and appearance. While the options are somewhat sparse compared to today’s standards, the number of origin stories and their differences is impressive and could determine how others perceive and view the Guardian.

In addition to customization, player characters also have the option to choose 2 out of 4 possible romances, as Morrigan and Alistair are exclusive to male and female Guardians respectively. It is quite possible that these choices will change in Veil Guard through shared dialogue between NPCs or even as part of the lore. It would be more fan service than it would significantly affect the game’s plot, but players would likely be happy to see these choices reflected in their world.

5 The fate of Redcliffe

Redcliffe could serve as a powerful reminder to put your trust in the hands of a hero

While Originsplayers travel to various locations in Ferelden, including the village of Redcliffe, which has become the next target of the darkspawn that is overrunning the land, leaving only devastation and death in its wake. It is a mission that players can fail without it being game over, as they can choose to simply overwhelm it, or it can happen due to player carelessness.

It certainly affects how NPCs view the Guardian, because if they can’t even save one settlement, how can they expect to save the entire continent? And failure could lead to people taking it as a reason to perhaps not trust the Rook when trying to save a settlement from invasion – if even the mighty Guardian failed, then what hopes could this new hero have? But whether they save it or not, the decision will likely be reflected in game law, and who knows what other consequences this might have over the years since the events of Origins.

4 The Circle Quest

Friction between mages and templars has always existed in Dragon Age

Although the name of the series Dragon AgeConflicts between different factions are always present in the plot of the games, but none is as delicate as that of the Templars and Mages. In the world of Dragon AgeMagic is a double-edged sword, for its use can attract demons from the Fade, the plane that mages use to cast spells. Opportunistic demons sometimes take advantage of young and naive mages, offering them deals that ultimately benefit only the demon. Mages in the Circle must undergo the torture to prove they can resist such temptations.

The Templars are the other side of the coin, and in Originsplayers had to choose between one of these two factions. This decision could potentially have an impact on the plot of Veil Guardespecially since it is set in Tevinter, where mages rule. For example, if players side with the Templars, the magisters might see that faction as a threat to all mages.

3 Did Loghain live or die?

The Landsmeet allows players to take revenge or turn an enemy into an ally

Loghain is a complex character. Although he serves as an antagonist to the two remaining Guardians after withdrawing his army at the Battle of Ostagar, he has great influence over the land and seems to care about the fate of the land and love his daughter very much. One could even argue that he chose to maintain troops to protect the rest of the land since Ostagar was already lost.

When players attend the Landsmeet, they have the opportunity to confront Loghain about his actions in Ostagar, and they are given a choice: execute him or draft him into the Grey Wardens. If he is drafted, it is not entirely impossible that he may still be alive when Veil Guard appears, and if he is dead, perhaps there will be a mention of the man who nearly sealed the fate of Thedas by wiping out the Grey Wardens.

2 The Monarch of Ferelden

The guardian could decide to whom he would give the crown

The current King of Ferelden is killed in battle at the beginning of the game, but there are two possible heirs to the throne: Anora Mac Tir, Cailan’s widowed wife, and Alistair Theirin, Maric’s illegitimate son. In the final hours of the game, players must decide who will rule Ferelden, Anora or Alistair. If the player is a Cousland, they can even marry and become King or Queen alongside him, depending on their character’s gender, or they can even decide that Alistair and Anora should rule together.

This decision had an impact on the subsequent games, Dragon Age 2 And Dragon Age: Inquisitionand there is no indication that this would not be possible in Veil Guard. Even though the story is set primarily in Tevinter, who’s to say players won’t get a royal visit from the King and/or Queen of Ferelden? That would be a treat for long-time fans of the series.

1 The final fate of the Guardian in Origins

Depending on the final decisions, the Guardian could live or die

The Grey Wardens are needed to put an end to the plague. If the archdemon is killed by someone else, his soul will occupy the body of the next darkspawn, so the plague doesn’t really end. If he dies at the hand of a Grey Warden, the soul will possess that Warden, killing them both. Fortunately, Morrigan offers the Warden a way out by conceiving a baby with either the male Warden or Alistair, who promises that the soul will be absorbed by her child, no sacrifice required.

So there are several possibilities Origins If the ritual is not performed, the Guardian could die or Alistair could sacrifice himself. Although it is unlikely that the silent protagonist of Origins would appear in the game if they survived, the decision made could still have an impact, especially with regard to the Dark Ritual.
