Partners want to transform Norway’s Risavika into a center for green ammonia

The aim of the collaboration is to leverage the combined expertise and resources of all partners to build a value chain for the production, storage, distribution and use of green ammonia in the maritime industry.

Dr. Eivind Hornnes, The business developer at the Port of Stavanger commented: “Green ammonia has the potential to make large parts of the shipping fleet emission-free. To drive the energy transition, ammonia must be as accessible as fossil fuels are today. That is our goal. This partnership is an important step towards a sustainable future for shipping and strengthens Stavanger as an energy region.”

Hornnes also stressed that the port will promote cooperation and help bring together partners with similar initiatives.

Hege Økland, The CEO of Iverson eFuels said: “There are almost 2,000 port calls in Risavika every year, and these could become emission-free with green ammonia from Sauda. We look forward to working with forward-thinking companies that can help us bring our ammonia to market.”

According to Iverson eFuels, the partners will work together to set standards and ensure an “efficient, safe and customer-friendly” bunkering infrastructure.

Runar Hatletvedt, The Managing Director of ASCO Norge noted: “The use of ammonia as a fuel requires new infrastructure, such as storage tanks and bunkering facilities in the port. ASCO is ready to build such facilities and ensure that this is done in a safe and sustainable manner. As part of this partnership, we will conduct risk assessments and ensure that the facility complies with national safety standards and regulations.”

Simon Hauland, The P2X/Renewable Energy Project Manager at St1 added: “St1 is in close dialogue with operators and end customers. Together with our partners, we will promote knowledge about ammonia as a fuel and ensure that we can supply it as soon as shipowners have installed ammonia engines on their vessels. By working together, we can accelerate the pace of the energy transition and encourage operators and shipowners to invest in ammonia-powered vessels.”
