McDonald’s menu “without onions and garlic” during Sawan causes discontent on the Internet: “Eat home-cooked food”

McDonald’s India has introduced a Sawan special menu.

McDonald’s India has introduced burger options “without onions and garlic” for its Hindu customers during the auspicious month of Sawan. However, some social media users were unhappy, pointing out that those fasting during the month are not even allowed to eat buns as they are made from wheat flour. “Those who celebrate Shravan know that this time encourages devotees to eat a balanced and vegetarian diet. To support our customers’ sentiments, it is always a good feeling to know that McDonald’s India’s menu is tailored to our many diverse Indian communities,” the fast-food chain said while announcing the menu.

Shravan is the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar and is considered one of the holiest months, especially for the worshippers of the god Shiva. During this month, many Hindus fast on Mondays (dedicated to the god Shiva) and Saturdays (dedicated to the goddess Parvati). The month is filled with various religious activities, rituals and festivals that bring families and communities together in devotion and celebration.

This is how social media users reacted:

“Can’t we prohibit ourselves from eating in such places during the holy month?” asked one person.

“Why do you even want to eat such fancy food in this holy month? At least eat home-cooked food for a month,” said another.

“Bhaisaab, Maida kab se khane lage fasting ke din? (Since when can we eat maida on fasting days?),” wondered one Instagram user. However, some people explained that although some Hindus do not fast during Shravan, they still avoid onions and garlic.
