The pillars of the Arnot Art Museum are being torn down, but don’t worry, Elmira’s downtown museum will remain where it should be.

The original columns that adorn the entrance at 235 Lake Street are being carefully removed and restored as part of the Four Columns Restoration Project.

Visitors to the Arnot Art Museum should expect to navigate around scaffolding and barrier tape around the main staircase during ongoing construction. The museum advises caution in the affected areas.

“The four columns restoration project represents an important step in preserving the architectural integrity and historical significance of the Arnot Art Museum,” the museum stated. “These iconic columns are a central feature of the museum’s façade and their restoration will ensure their continued presence for generations to come.”

The museum gallery remains open during regular visiting hours. Visit us Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“Use the ramp on the south side of the building. It leads to the portico and the main entrance,” advises the museum. “Follow the signs that say ‘OPEN’.”

The columns were part of the construction of a Greek Revival-style house built by the Arnot family in 1833. A gallery was later added to the building, which houses a permanent collection of 17th- to 19th-century European paintings and 19th- and 20th-century American art. Temporary exhibitions are curated to highlight different aspects of the collections and include works from around the world.

“The museum plays an important role in our region’s heritage and attracts visitors to our community,” said Jennifer Herrick-McGonigal, president and CEO of the Chemung County Chamber of Commerce.
