Recent sighting of John Klingberg sparks speculation about Maple Leafs reunion

Recent sighting of John Klingberg sparks speculation about Maple Leafs reunion

John Klingberg’s tenure with the Maple Leafs was a huge disappointment, but now there may be a chance he could return to Toronto next season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have improved tremendously under Brad Treliving, but one major misstep was the signing of John Klingberg to a one-year deal in the summer of 2023. In his only season with Toronto, the veteran defenseman only appeared in 14 games due to ongoing injury problems. Although he did provide five assists during that time, his performance was also -7 and he did not play for the team afterward.

With the signings of Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Jani Hakanpaa in the offseason, it would seem that Klingberg’s time in Toronto was over. But that may no longer be the case, as a recent post from a current Maple Leaf caused a stir among Leafs fans.

Pontus Holmberg’s partner posted a photo on social media of the pair hanging out with John Klingberg. His presence near former teammates and the situation suggest that he may still have the right connections in Toronto and that after getting a contract from Brad Treliving, the GM may want to have him back to give him a chance at a fully healthy season.

With Jani Hakanpaa’s contract still pending, Klingberg’s connection to Holmberg and his presence could lead to renewed talks between the Maple Leafs and Klingberg. His best chance of playing in the NHL this season is at least a possible backup role.
