Repairs to Walton Way sinkhole completed one month later

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – On Monday, workers completed repairs to a sinkhole that opened up last month on Walton Way.

The sinkhole opened last month near the Windsor Court neighborhood and Langford Middle School.

Some cars may have had to slow down at times as Belair Middle School students temporarily congregated on that campus.

Those responsible say they are aiming for October 1st as the completion date for their new school.

Almost a week after the sinkhole opened on July 31, workers managed to close it.

According to Augusta Utilities, the sinkhole was caused by a pipe break that led to the road collapse.

When officials went to repair the sinkhole, they discovered that improvements were necessary because a sewer line ran through it.

They say the weather was a factor in delaying repairs.

Tropical Storm Debby caused this washout on Eureka Road in Screven County.

“Obviously, when it comes to weather conditions, safety is the number one priority when there is thunderstorms and lightning. Emergency crews cannot work in those conditions, so it just depends on the weather and the type of damage,” said Leandra Collins of Augusta Utilities.

The sidewalk was bent around the deep hole in front of Langford Middle School, 3019 Walton Way.

It was big enough to swallow a medium-sized car.

A neighbor says he was shocked when he came home one night.

“I was coming home from dinner. It was dark and I usually turn into Windsor Court from Walton Way. I noticed some neighbors were on the street waving at me. I turned and narrowly missed a huge hole in the street. Apparently the hole had just fallen into the ground and disappeared,” said Michael Hearon, pastor of First Presbyterian Church.
