A new non-fiction book will soon be in the hands of book lovers.

According to a press release provided to PEOPLE, Ta-Nehisi Coates – a journalist and New York Times bestselling author – will publish his first nonfiction book in a decade this fall.

One World, an imprint of Random House Publishing Group, announced on Thursday, May 29, that Coates will publish his book The message on October 1, 2024.

“How do the stories our writers, historians, and politicians tell – our tales of nationalism, our fables of superiority, our deeply held lies and hidden histories – shape the world around us and our most intimate notions of ourselves?” the press release asks. “Ta-Nehisi Coates is one of the most renowned authors of his generation, but he is also a college professor whose students always lead him back to this simple question: Why do stories matter in an age of war, inequality, and intersecting crises?”

The message will explore this very question using the examples of South Carolina, Palestine and Senegal.

According to the press release, the author uses personal narratives, literature, history and on-the-ground reporting to convey an understanding of the truth that is obscured by “propaganda, wishful thinking and enforced silence.”

“In his best works, Ta-Nehisi takes his readers along as trusted companions on his journeys into history, the American present, and his own inquisitive, inquisitive mind,” said Chris Jackson, publisher and editor-in-chief of One World, in a statement. “In The message It shows itself at its most detailed and concise – here an author tries to find clarity in a confusing world using the means of reportage, language and imagination.”

“I am delighted to be publishing again with Chris, One World and Penguin/Random House, but I am especially delighted to be publishing nonfiction again at this special political moment,” Coates said, according to the press release.

The message will be released on October 1st and can now be pre-ordered wherever the book is sold.
