Green Day celebrate 20 years of “American Idiot” with massive reissue

Green Day celebrates the 20th anniversary of their American Idiot this October with a comprehensive reissue that combines the original 2004 “punk rock opera” with its B-sides, bonus tracks, unreleased demos and live recordings from that era.

20th Anniversary of American Idiotwill be released on October 25th as either an 8LP/2Blu-Ray or 4CD/2Blu-Ray Deluxe Edition, also includes the film “Heart Like A Hand Grenade”, 35 minutes of the band live on the BBC and a new documentary called “20 Years of American Idiot”.

The unreleased material includes 15 demos from the recording sessions, including early recordings of album hits such as the title track, “Holiday,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” as well as a recording of Green Day’s concert at Irving Plaza in New York on September 21, 2004, the day of the album’s release.

Before the release of the reissue, Green Day unveiled the deluxe edition with three tracks: an unreleased demo of “Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams (Demo),” the B-side “Favorite Son,” and “Minority (Live from Irving Plaza).”

With “American Idiot,” a concept album about a disillusioned teenager nicknamed “Jesus of Suburbia,” Billie Joe Armstrong and co. revealed their political leanings for the first time after years of youth anthems, criticizing the Iraq War and the government of George W. Bush on the album titles.

Despite the rather serious material, the album was a number one hit with multi-platinum certification and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” was also named Record of the Year at the Grammys. American Idiot also inspired a stage musical of the same name.

The deluxe edition of 20th Anniversary of American Idiotcan be pre-ordered now, also includes a comprehensive book — including liner notes by American Idiot Producer Rob Cavallo and Rolling Stoneby David Fricke – with a chronicle of the LP, a large Green Day flag and the legendary red tie from American Idiot.

Green Day celebrated American Idiot (and 1994 Dookie) will be on tour this year in support of their new album saviorand plays the entire 2004 double album.
