Green shines Cristiano Ronaldo‘s color lately.
The Real Madrid star was attacked by emerald green lasers during the Clasico against Barcelona last month.
A week later, he slipped into a dark turf jersey that spelled the downfall of his old club, Manchester United.
And now the 28-year-old also seems to have developed a green thumb.
Ronaldo was appointed ambassador of the Bali-based Forum Peduli Mangrove (Mangrove Care Forum) on Friday. According to the press release, the Portuguese captain will help “raise awareness of mangrove conservation in Indonesia.”
How exactly the most expensive footballer in the world intends to fill this role is still unclear.
He explained:
“I have the privilege of being able to play a role in protecting mangroves in Indonesia. I was in Aceh after the 2004 tsunami and the destruction I saw there really impressed me. I know that in places where there were mangroves protecting the ecosystem from high waves, more lives were saved and less damage was done.”
In December 2004, footage of the Indian Ocean disaster went viral, showing an eight-year-old orphan wearing a Portuguese football shirt with the number 7 (Ronaldo’s number). The then-protégé of Sir Alex Ferguson visited Aceh a week later and helped raise one billion rupees for relief and reconstruction efforts.
Ronaldo is well known for his philanthropy in the past – especially given the rumors of a mega-transfer back to Manchester United that would involve corporate bosses Nike and General Motors and an obscenely soulless amount of money.
