a nonprofit organization focused on free music education for New Orleans youth, recently gave away 300 backpacks, 200 Chick-fil-A gift cards, 10 pianos and 10 guitars to local children during its fourth annual Stop the Violence youth bike ride and school supply giveaway. The back-to-school party also featured snowballs, rental bikes, party buses and food.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation

recently awarded a $50,000 grant to Fritai, chef Charly Pierre’s Haitian restaurant on Basin Street. Fritai is one of 50 small restaurants across the U.S. to receive a grant this year from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express to renew or expand their business.

Earlier this month, anti-trans propaganda and disinformation intensified about Algerian Olympic boxer Imane Khelif. After Khelif defeated Italy’s Angela Carini, anti-trans commentators claimed Khelif was transgender or was illegally competing in women’s sports, and Tate joined in, declaring, “That’s illegal in Louisiana,” according to the state’s anti-trans sports ban. The discriminatory law only applies to school sports; Khelif was born female, identifies as a woman, and has received clearance from the International Olympic Committee to compete.
