Red Sox “Big Three” promoted to Triple-A

Red Sox “Big Three” promoted to Triple-A

The Boston Red Sox farm system has some great talent that plays together regularly, and that will continue to be the case in 2024. Boston’s top talent, the “Big Three,” are all moving up the organization’s rankings on Sunday. Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony and Kyle Teel are moving from Double-A (Portland Sea Dogs) to Triple-A (Worcester Red Sox), according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. The group is ranked in the top 25 talents according to MLB.com. None of them have ever reached the AAA level.

Red Sox “Big Three” talents move to Triple-A

It was a dominant season for the three, who shot up the junior rankings this season. In 2024, Portland’s team was ranked as the third-best minor league team in baseball. Much of that is thanks to Mayer, Anthony and Teel, all of whom have developed strongly. Four of Boston’s top five junior players began the year with the Sea Dogs. Right-handed pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez (No. 5) is the only one left.

Marcelo Mayer – SS – MLB’s Most Promising Player No. 6

Mayer is the headliner of the group being called up to Triple-A. The 21-year-old has had a mostly trouble-free minor league career so far. Mayer was selected fourth overall in the 2021 MLB Draft out of high school. He reached Double-A for the first time in 2023. After struggling last season, Mayer exploded in 2024. This year with the Sea Dogs, he batted .307 with an OPS of .850 and 28 doubles. He was recently activated from the injured list but missed less than two weeks. Mayer was part of the All-Star Futures Game, where he represented the American League.

Mayer is currently considered the sixth-best prospect in baseball. One of the players ahead of him, Jackson Holliday (Baltimore Orioles), is already in the MLB. Three of the top six come from the AL East, with Holliday at the top and Junior Caminero (Tampa Bay Rays) in second. Mayer is the third-best infielder on the list. That’s the highest ranking he’s ever achieved from the MLB.

Roman Anthony – OF – MLB’s No. 13 prospect

Anthony is the Red Sox’s second-best prospect, selected 79th overall in the 2022 MLB Draft. He got off to a slow start in 2024, hitting just .219 on May 10. Since then, things have been different for the 20-year-old. Anthony was hitting .267 in mid-June and .284 in July. He has been in top form in his last 10 matchups, collecting 18 hits, 11 RBIs and four home runs. Anthony hit .269/.367/.489 with 15 home runs in Double-A this year.

Anthony became the 13th young player in baseball ranked Sunday, the highest mark of his career. Only three outfielders are better than him: Dylan Crews (Washington Nationals), Walker Jenkins (Minnesota Twins) and Max Clark (Detroit Tigers). Anthony helps Boston become one of five MLB clubs with multiple players ranked in the top 15. In his final at-bat with Portland, he hit a game-winning home run.

Kyle Teel – C – MLB’s No. 23 prospect

Teel completes the Red Sox prospects heading to Worcester. He is the only one who attended college, spending three years at the University of Virginia. Selected with the 14th pick of the 2023 MLB Draft, Teel immediately performed at his best in the minors. He played at three levels last season, posting a .363 batting average in 26 games. He continued to perform well in 2024, making 84 appearances for the Sea Dogs. Teel posted a .298 batting average with 11 home runs, 60 RBIs and 20 doubles this season. He is off to a good start in August, posting an OPS of 1.032 in 30 at-bats.

Teel makes Boston one of only three clubs with three top-25 talents. He is the fifth-best catcher on the list, behind a group led by Ethan Salas (San Diego Padres). Teel has already moved up nearly 20 spots in 2024 after starting the year ranked 40th. Triple-A will be his fourth level in just 110 minor league games.
