I guess the whole world and their uncles are talking about the reunification of oasis It’s an excellent time to reflect on what might have happened in the indie world had the dice been cast differently. Many of the sonic ingredients that make up Britpop were mined, plundered, stolen or plagiarized from the sounds of the ’60s; that much is clear.

But imagine what would have happened if the bands responsible for this sound had been more sophisticated in their taste. Instead of simply reproducing forgotten T-Rex Guitar riffs and Beatles album track choruses, they had dug deeper into the more nuanced side of psychedelia, the world of cinematic chamber pop or learned a few tricks from underground folk music. Well, the big sound of the nineties might have sounded more like Small Juke‘s debut single than the boy anthems and sing-alongs we ended up with. But at least Little Juke are here to make up for lost time.

“Down the Rabbit Hole” is a beautiful and original piece that soars from hazy folktronic delights to more driving indie sounds, a slow-burning piece that grows as it progresses, gaining musical weight by wrapping itself in additional tones and textures, sounds and sounds as it progresses.

And this is not music for quick hits, obvious hooks or chart-worthy creations that everyone likes. This is music that follows its own rules; more cinematic than commercial, more confident than pop, more charming than chart-worthy… and that’s all the better for that.
