If you’ve lived in Boston long enough, you’ve heard of the bridge attacks known by the infamous name “Storrowings.”

Named after Storrow Drive, where many of the bridges and pedestrian bridges suitable for height difficulties are located, the name is also applied to other roads along the Charles River, such as Soldiers Field Road in Boston and Memorial Drive in Cambridge. The busy thoroughfares are close to many of the area’s colleges and universities.

Photojournalist Mark Garfinkel has been covering bridge accidents in Boston for more than 30 years, first for the Boston Herald and now for NBC10 Boston. He says he’s noticed “a sharp increase” this year in the number of bridge accidents he’s documented.

“I mean, I can’t remember that many,” he said.

The good news, he says, is that most drivers involved in such bridge collisions escape uninjured. The bad news is the chain reaction of each incident: a traffic nightmare for motorists in the area.

Garfinkel said his images of “Storrowed” trucks are popular on social media, where many of the various damaged trucks are given nicknames.

There’s the ‘proper storrowing,’ which is just a normal wedge. And there’s the ‘tin can,’ which is the crunching from above,” Garfinkel said.

He also described the “tinfoil” where the roof of the truck is peeled off and hangs like tinfoil from the back.

“This is really a Boston thing,” Garfinkel said.
