Arcade machine is the latest addition to the student gaming room – The Rambler

A free-to-play arcade machine has been installed in the Gaming Room, Martin Center, Room 129.

The machine is a product of Dream Arcades and features over 300 games from companies such as Nintendo, Sega, Atari and PlayStation. Dr. Dennis Hall, vice president of student affairs and dean of students, coordinated the purchase and installation of the machine throughout the summer.

“At the end of last year, I was thinking about what we could do to make (the gaming room) a fun place,” Hall said.

Although the machine was only delivered in July, it has been used more and more frequently since the start of the fall semester of 2024. Among the first users of the machine was first-year computer science student Kortlon Duhe.

“(The slot machine) gives us something to do between classes instead of going back to our dorms,” Duhe said. “As a freshman, sometimes you don’t know anyone and it’s hard to get out and meet people. This makes it easier.”

“I have Street Fighter personally, so it was nice to see it on an arcade machine,” said Duhe. “I’ve never played it with a joystick, so I’m still trying to get used to it.” (Kehinde Hopkins)

Depending on student feedback, another arcade machine could be installed in the games room.

“I think if (the arcade machine) is a hit this year, we might get a second one for that spot,” Hall said.

While student response was positive, concerns were raised about the machine’s mechanics and gameplay.

“The joysticks are quite stiff and difficult to use,” said Ulises Lopez, a second-year business administration student.

The Marketing and Communications Office is currently designing a custom TXWES sign featuring Willie the Ram that will be placed on the slot machine in the coming weeks.
