Bananas have been considered the perfect bedtime snack for years. But it turns out they may not contribute anything to sleep quality. A recent study has found that bananas – although nutritious – may not help us sleep.

Bananas are great sources of magnesium, potassium and vitamin B6 – nutrients that have a calming effect on the body. However, one banana cannot meet the body’s daily needs for these nutrients. For example, bananas are known for their potassium content, but in reality, one banana can only meet 10% of the body’s daily potassium needs.

Banana and its nutritional content:

Due to the potassium, magnesium and vitamin B6 content in bananas, these fruits have a reputation for making it easier to fall asleep.

Magnesium is known to calm us down and help us relax. However, bananas contain less than 30 milligrams of magnesium, while the body’s daily requirement is 400 milligrams. Therefore, the diet should be aimed at meeting the body’s daily magnesium requirements.

Vitamin B6 helps regulate mood and increases serotonin production. The daily requirement of vitamin B6 is 1.3 milligrams – bananas can provide 0.4 milligrams of it. Vitamin B6 promotes sleep and bananas can help meet some of this requirement.

Does banana help you sleep?

Bananas are extremely nutritious and are usually safe when consumed before bedtime. It is recommended to include bananas in the daily diet as well, but people with high blood sugar should be cautious.
