My Favorite Room … with Hannah Webb and Maddi Meglic

When best friends Hannah Webb and Maddi Meglic bought their first pottery wheel, it was on the balcony of their shared apartment. It was a small space that reflected the size of their business at the time.

Since their small-batch handmade ceramics are in high demand across the country, they have now moved to larger premises to further expand their business.

And they’ve kept mementos that inspire them and remind them of how far they’ve come: Maddi’s tools from her first college ceramics class, a salt bowl made by eight-year-old Hannah, and test tiles from their first year of business that adorn a windowsill.

Another pillar of support is their loyal (but furry) studio manager, Gilbert. Gilbert grew up in the world of pottery and spends his time overseeing the Kindred team as they try to keep up with orders and create a more pleasant work environment.

It’s easy to see why this is the Kindred Makers’ favorite room.

3 tips for recreating this studio:

1. Keep the layout simple and focused. This space is meant to be functional, so we wanted to make sure it flowed well, was free of clutter, and supported efficiency.

2. We kept the aesthetic of the space neutral and light. This not only reflects the style of our work, but also helps keep our minds clear. Pottery is a messy process, so we want to limit the chaos in the studio.

3. Although all of our furniture is designed to be functional, we wanted it to be as beautiful and high quality as possible. Just because it’s a work space doesn’t mean it has to feel like a warehouse. We like to light a candle and play music to add to the homey atmosphere.
