Gator legend Billy Donovan returns to Gainesville and tells his story of faith and leadership

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – Nine years after his retirement, legendary Florida basketball coach Billy Donovan is still giving back to the Gainesville community. Impact for Living organizers said Donovan was a man of deep faith and conviction.

“I wouldn’t trade my 19 years here for anything. It’s been an incredible experience and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,” Donovan said.

Billy Donovan’s tenure at Florida was historic, a two-time national champion, six-time SEC champion and three-time SEC Coach of the Year, but what he loved most about Gainesville were his connections off the court.

“People have been incredible to me, my wife and my kids for 19 years,” Donovan said. “I’m always grateful for that.”

During the NBA offseason, Donovan spoke to a packed audience at the Rock of Gainesville Church about his faith and leadership skills, discussing the difficulties of raising a young family in a new job and finding balance.

“Vulnerability is a source of strength and power,” said Donovan. “Everyone has to decide for themselves how vulnerable they want to be. For me, it’s important to be honest.”

A lifelong Gator fan came to learn more about Donovan’s walk with God and his faith.

“Since I work with youth, I want to know how to properly guide them, especially athletes. I want them to be good Christians and good athletes at the same time,” said Gainesville resident Keith Archer.

Donovan still owns a home in Gainesville and three of his children live here. He said his youngest daughter just graduated from UF. It’s clear he’s still very comfortable in Gainesville.
