The ECU Pirates offense will have a new face this season

GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) – With football just around the corner, ECU fans will be expecting a lot more from the offense this year.

After a season in which the Pirates were among the ten worst teams in terms of points, they have changed several aspects of their offense.

They hired John David Baker from Ole Miss as their new offensive coordinator and Jake Garcia from Missouri as their quarterback.

When you add in the NCAA’s rule change that allows coaches to communicate with their quarterbacks via helmet before the snap, the offense will undoubtedly look different this year.

Baker says, “It’s going to be a little bit of trial and error for sure, but that’s why I’m just thankful that we’ve been able to use it every day in practice. We’ve used it in practice games, we’ve used it with the 15-second cutoff, so we’ve done some test runs. The best advice I’ve gotten is don’t talk into his backswing, don’t get in his head. You’ve spent x hours training the guy, trust that training, don’t trust that you’re going to tell him something 5 seconds before he snaps the ball that’s going to make the difference.”

Baker, Garcia and the Pirates will put that to the test this Saturday when they put on their helmets for the 6 p.m. kickoff against Norfolk State at Dowdy Ficklen Stadium.
