Always do the following after eating to whiten your teeth, advises the dentist

A dentist has revealed her top tip for “getting whiter teeth, avoiding bad breath and reducing the risk of tooth decay”. It’s easy to incorporate into your daily routine and anyone who does it will benefit, she says.

Dr. Shaadi Manouchehri stressed the importance of drinking water, especially after meals. “Your teeth will basically thank you,” she said.

On her TikTok page, the dentist explained: “After you have your meal or snack or coffee/tea, it is very important that you drink water or sip it. This will help expel everything much faster.

“This also ensures that your body produces the right amount of saliva to remove ingested food particles from your teeth much more quickly,” reports the Express.

She added: “To anyone who grabs a toothbrush and toothpaste to brush their teeth after eating or drinking, this is wrong. Put the toothbrush away.”

The dentist warns against over-brushing and the fact that doing so “actually wears away the enamel and gums”. According to the NHS, enamel cannot grow back if it is damaged or worn away, so it is very important to look after it, otherwise teeth will look yellower and become more sensitive.

She said, “You don’t need to brush more than twice a day for two minutes. If you brush more often, you will damage your teeth and gums.”

“Instead, you can just drink water. If you really, really need a little refreshment, use mouthwash, but don’t use abrasive toothbrushes because that can be quite damaging.”

To maintain optimal oral health, you should schedule regular appointments with your dentist. These check-ups are usually recommended every six months and are crucial for detecting problems early, making treatment easier and more effective.

The NHS website stresses the importance of not neglecting dental problems as this can lead to damage that is difficult or sometimes even impossible to repair.
