Nutritionist gives tips for young, picky eaters

QUINCY (WGEM) – Sometimes it’s hard to get kids to eat certain foods because they’re picky eaters. Vegetables in particular can be tricky.

According to Brittany Winship, a dietitian at Quincy Medical Group, one way you can get your kids to eat their vegetables is to add dips and seasonings to make them more palatable.

Another way to change your children’s picky behavior is to break one of the basic rules of etiquette that many learned at a young age.

“I think in previous generations we tended to say, ‘Don’t play with your food.’ But it helps to let children play with food from a young age because it gives them the sensations of their fingers – smell, touch – and so they’re more likely to eat it,” says Winship.

She said it’s also a good idea to get children involved in preparing and cooking meals with you, as this will help them become more familiar with food and develop more interest in it.

“You know, depending on their age… you know, doing things that are appropriate in the kitchen,” Winship said. “They have kids’ knives now that aren’t super sharp that they can cut with. You know, they can be involved in baking. You know, even picking out a recipe.”

Winship added: When children are given the opportunity to choose recipes with dishes they like, they are more likely to eat and enjoy them.

Another tip from Winship is to make sure that children do not drink too much before meals, because then they may be too full and not want to eat anything else.
