Will school start again soon?

After you’ve prepared your casual clothes and the things you need to bring to campus, there’s just one thing left to do: organize your dorm room.

Creating a functional and stylish dorm room can be fun, but it can also be challenging. It’s important that it’s functional and stylish because it’s more than just a place to sleep – it’s also a place where you can study and hang out with your friends.

Below are some tips from Home Buddies members to help you design a dorm room that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing.

Maximize storage space

Maximizing storage space in a dorm room is key to creating a functional and organized space, especially when size is limited.

To achieve this, community member Franchezka de Guzman used multifunctional furniture that doubles as storage units for extra items like blankets and books. According to her, they are “space savers” as they can accommodate up to five medium-sized organizers. Aside from not being bulky, they can also add style to your room.

Another trick to maximize storage space is to use a rolling cart, like another author named Isabel Victoria did, to keep her things within reach while she works.

“The first level is for my essential photo cards, the second is for my melatonin, trash can, journal, spare keyboard, etc. The third is where I put my snacks, mail I need to send, baby wipes, and two bins full of school supplies and other photo card essentials like top loaders, extra sleeves, etc,” she wrote in the caption.

If you want high-quality bedding and want to save space at the same time, then opt for a loft bed, which is very popular among people living in student dormitories or small spaces due to its practical advantages and versatility.

By raising the bed off the floor, you can free up valuable floor space underneath. This area can be used for a variety of purposes, such as a desk, seating, storage space or even a small lounge area.

This also allows you to clearly separate your sleeping area from the other living areas. This separation makes the room appear more organized and less cluttered. You can designate specific areas for sleeping, studying and socializing, contributing to a more structured and efficient living environment.

Choose a color scheme

Choosing a color scheme for your dorm room is also important to create a functional and stylish dorm room. It helps tie together different elements in the room such as furniture, bedding, and decorations, creating a cohesive and visually appealing environment. It also ensures that the different pieces in the room do not clash with each other and complement each other.

For example, virtual captain AJ Pizarro chose a minimalist, white boho style for his room, especially his work area, which he said is his “favorite place.”

This also applies to another community contributor who made his dream room come true with a bedroom in matte black and white minimalist line design and a cozy atmosphere through tri-color lights in modern style.

Add a personal touch

Personalizing your space can make it feel warm and homey. A space that reflects your personality and interests can serve as a refuge from the often hectic college life because it makes you feel “unique” in it.

For example, a Home Buddies community member and K-pop fan incorporated various wallpapers, photo cards, and merchandise from her favorite K-pop boy band BTS into her room. Decorating her room this way “brought her joy and helped me stay sane” and kept her “motivated.”

“Studying was very hard, especially because of online classes. And when I got back home, my desk area wasn’t exactly the most pleasant and lively part of my room, so it was a challenge for me to stay motivated,” she said.

Comfort and seating

College can be stressful, so it’s important to have a comfortable space with your own armchair or sofa where you can read, watch TV, and just take a break.

You can take inspiration from another virtual captain named Roselle Almuete, who designed her dream room on a budget while emphasizing comfort and style. She achieved this with a DIY storage bench, dining table, boho mirror, headboard, and bracket frame, among other things.

“It’s been a while since we started looking for a new hotel, aesthetic and room destinations,” she said.

Create a learning zone

A designated study area can also be helpful as it allows you to catch up on your reading and complete your assignments without distraction. It also allows you to keep your study materials organized and easily accessible, making for a stylish and functional space.

For example, Home Buddies member Glennard Santos recycled an old sewing machine for his desk and added a wooden top to it.

“May instant laruan pa ang paa kapag naiinip,” he joked.

Pink lovers, unite! Community member Alyssa Faye Galicinao Baui recently shared a photo of her workspace, and it’s all pink and adorable.

Alyssa personalized it with her name on top of her computer monitor. Her white table, pink chair and wall were decorated with pink hues from illuminated roses, desk pad, cabinet and Subscribe on the shelves.

If you like something a little more minimalist and clean, take inspiration from this inspiration from Tene Derla. She enhanced her workspace by using wallpaper, wooden frames, lampshades and plastic leaves.
