Hawaiian Airlines and Barclays are currently offering a great bonus on their co-branded business credit card, as announced by Frequent Miler. This offer could be worth it even if you wouldn’t otherwise earn HawaiianMiles, as they could eventually convert to Alaska Mileage Plan miles.
Hawaiian Business Card with great bonus
The Hawaiian Airlines Business Mastercard, a co-branded credit card from Hawaiian Airlines with Barclays, costs $99 per year and offers a bonus of up to 70,000 miles:
- Earn 60,000 bonus miles after spending $2,000 within the first 90 days
- Earn an additional 10,000 bonus miles when you make a purchase with an employee card within the first 90 days.

Rewards and benefits with the Hawaiian Business Card
The Hawaiian Business Mastercard offers some potentially useful perks, although I suspect they won’t be worth it for most people. These include:
- 3x miles for purchases at Hawaiian Airlines and 2x miles for purchases at fuel, food and office supplies
- No fees for foreign transactions
- 20,000 bonus miles when you spend $50,000-$99,000 on the card in a cardmember year and 40,000 bonus miles when you spend more than $100,000 on the card in a cardmember year
- A one-time 50% discount on a published round-trip economy class fare for one companion, excluding taxes and fees, valid for 13 months from account opening and between Hawaii and the rest of North America.
Honestly, there are no real benefits there that I find particularly compelling. There are cards with better bonus categories, and even when you factor in the annual spending bonuses, there are better cards for everyday spending.
Why I should apply for this card
I don’t find Hawaiian Airlines’ HawaiianMiles program particularly lucrative. Yes, it’s good for redemptions with Hawaiian, but it’s difficult to get saver-level award space. Also, while some redemptions with partners are possible, they’re limited and not very flexible or competitive.
The reason I would get this card is because Alaska is in the process of acquiring Hawaiian and Mileage Plan may become the combined frequent flyer program for the two airlines. Mileage Plan miles can be used in a lot of great ways and I expect that at some point these miles will be redeemable in this way.
Of course, I have to mention that things can still go wrong and there are unknowns. While it’s very likely that the merger will happen, it’s not over until it’s over. Also, it’s unclear when points will be transferable between the two programs. But if you ask me, it’s a risk worth taking.
Conclusion
The Hawaiian Business Mastercard offers a solid welcome bonus, as you can earn up to 70,000 bonus miles. While I’m not particularly keen on the HawaiianMiles program, I find this offer more interesting than in the past, given the impending (or what looks like) acquisition of Hawaiian by Alaska and the airline’s plan to make Mileage Plan the surviving frequent flyer program.
