NOT long before we started planning Jimi Hendrix Cover story, I played Running down the voodoo! Explorations in psychrockfunksouljazz 1967–80a great 2017 compilation that explored black America’s response to the volume and possibilities of psychedelic rock. Along with George Clinton, Smart Stone And Miles DavisHendrix casts a considerable shadow over the proceedings – either in a very obvious sense, such as the way the Isley Brothers Transition from CSNYs “Ohio” into Hendrix’s “Machine Gun,” or as an electrifying force whose exploratory and progressive imperative encouraged others to follow his example. We look at some of the music Hendrix composed in his final creative outpouring, as part of Peter Watts’ cover story, which examines his fertile, if ultimately tragic, 1970. “He was the first person we knew who had stepped outside the status quo,” recalls a former friend. “He was the spirit of music.”
