Art adventures await you at the Manitowoc Public Library

The following article was written by Lynn Christiansen, a youth services employee at the Manitowoc Public Library.

Looking for a way to get creative? Then head to the Manitowoc Public Library this September and we’re offering two great ways to let your artistic imagination run wild.

The first program, Family activity evening: Many pointswill take place on Tuesday, September 10th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Balkansky common room. We will begin with the reading The point, by Peter H. Reynolds. In this story, a young girl named Vashti is frustrated because she feels she lacks the artistic talent to complete an assignment in art class. Her supportive teacher encourages Vashti to “leave her mark,” which inspires Vashti to explore her creative spirit. We will continue this with the opportunity to create dot-themed artwork, some of which will be on display at the library as part of International Dot Day, a day that “celebrates creativity, courage, and collaboration,” according to the library’s website. For more information about this global celebration, visit www.internationaldotday.org/. This program is open to children ages 5-11, and no registration is required.

Our second artistic project of the month is the return of the highly successful

Art workshop “Mini Masterpieces”. At our opening program, all 100 canvases were distributed and 73 unique creations were returned for display in the art exhibit. The workshop is open to ages five and up and will take place on Tuesday, September 24th at 6pm in the Balkansky Community Room. We welcome back Glaze & Paint LLC owner and operator Katie Schamburek-Reinboldt to share information on different painting styles as well as simple color theory. Each program participant will receive a kit that includes a 4′ x 4′ canvas, paint, brushes, and instructions. If time permits, artists can begin creating their artwork that same evening. No registration is required for this event. For those unable to attend the workshop, any remaining kits can be picked up at the library service desks beginning Wednesday, September 25th.

We will store all returned artworks during the Reception for the art exhibition “Mini Masterpieces”which will take place on Monday, November 3rd at 6pm in the Balkansky Community Room. In addition to the artwork display, there will be live music by Larry Tollefson, drinks and snacks, and photo ops courtesy of Glaze & Paint.
