Disneyland closes ten-year-old attraction to make room for expansion

Disney California Adventure will close a decade-old attraction that serves as a symbol of the once-troubled park’s redesign and a tribute to the Main Street USA vehicles that bring kinetic energy to Disneyland’s entrance promenade.

According to Disneyland, the Red Car Trolley at Disney California Adventure will close in early 2025.

The Red Car Trolley opened in 2012 as part of the redesign of the DCA entrance promenade with a themed motif paying homage to Walt Disney’s 1920s Los Angeles.

According to Disneyland, the expansion of Avengers Campus will displace the backstage location of the Red Car Trolley Barn.

Construction of the new attractions Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab will begin in 2025. The expansion is expected to double the size of the Marvel-themed land.

DCA’s Red Car Trolley was closed in 2019 to allow for construction of Avengers Campus and did not resume operation until 2022 after the parks closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Red Car Trolley, along with the addition of the Avengers Campus, presented a small thematic challenge for Walt Disney Imagineering.

The tram line runs past the futuristic “Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout” building and into the high-tech Marvel campus – both buildings that hardly exude the LA ambience of the 1920s.

The tram tracks run through a corner of the Avengers campus near Pym’s Test Kitchen and pass through a hidden door in the Avengers Headquarters building.

The DCA’s twin streetcars were modeled after the Pacific Electric Railway, which ran across Los Angeles from 1887 to 1961.

The trolley attraction serves as a mode of transportation that takes users on a scenic ride through Buena Vista Street and Hollywood Land, stopping near the DCA main entrance, Carthay Circle Restaurant, the Animation Academy building, and the Hyperion Theater.

The 20-seat trolleys are powered by batteries, with overhead wires running above the vehicles for show only, according to D23. The batteries on board are charged overnight in the trolley barn behind the stage.

Disneyland has not yet announced whether the streetcar tracks on Buena Vista Street, Hollywood Boulevard and Avengers Campus will be removed.

The show “Red Car News Boys,” which used the Red Car Trolley as a backdrop, was canceled in 2019.
