At Google I/O in May this year, Google announced the “Ask for photos‘ feature for Google Photos. It uses Google Gemini to answer queries about photos in your library.
For example, you can ask it: “What is my license plate number?“The feature then uses Google Photos’ AI assistant to scan photos in your Google Photos and if there’s a snapshot of your car, it pulls the license plate number from it and gives you that information.
At the time, the company didn’t announce when Ask Photos would be released, and we haven’t had any information about it since. That’s finally changing today.
Beta Google app for Android includes hints for Ask Photos release
Android Authority has four lines of code in the latest beta version of the Google app for Android (version 15.33.36.29) mentioning the Ask Photos extension for Gemini, suggesting that Google may introduce Ask Photos in Google Photos soon.
Not only will this feature be very useful, but it will also make Gemini more popular, which could lead to more people subscribing to the paid version of Google’s AI assistant. We hope Google doesn’t lock Ask Photos behind the paid subscription.
