Diabetes and binge eating – how are they related? Find out from your doctor here.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin or when the body cannot use the insulin produced effectively. Insulin helps regulate blood sugar levels in the body. Both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes are common. However, recently it has been found that diabetes – both types – is usually associated with binge eating. Eating disorders refer to unhealthy eating habits, which in turn can affect a person both physically and mentally. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Pramod Tripathi, founder of Freedom from Diabetes, explained the link between diabetes and eating disorders.

“The constant focus on nutrition and blood sugar control can lead to eating disorders," said Dr. Pramod Tripathi. (Unsplash)

Can diabetes accelerate eating disorders?

“Diabetics must carefully control their carbohydrate intake, monitor their blood sugar levels, and maintain strict medication or insulin routines. This constant focus on diet and health can create stress and anxiety, potentially triggering or worsening diet-related disorders. For example, the need for strict dietary control can lead to obsessive thoughts about food and body image, contributing to eating disorders such as binge eating or excessive calorie restriction,” added Dr. Pramod Tripathi.

Nutritional disorders that affect the treatment of diabetes:

Eating disorders such as bulimia, anorexia or binge eating can seriously interfere with diabetes treatment. The doctor continued: “For example, people with anorexia may restrict their food intake so much that they experience dangerously low blood sugar levels. On the other hand, people with bulimia may experience irregular blood sugar levels due to cycles of overeating and vomiting, making effective diabetes treatment difficult.”
